The CQ NRL Bid and QR National have turned up the heat on the rival NRL Bids, today announcing a Schools Program and Education Foundation for Central Queensland Schools. The CQ NRL Bid is well and truly on track after last month the State Government reiterated their firm commitment to build a Stadium in Central Queensland when the CQ NRL Bid gains admission to the National Rugby League. Now with major support for a Schools Program and an Education Foundation the momentum of the Bid is building.

CQ NRL Bid Chairman, Geoff Murphy believes the QR National Sponsorship is an indication of how far advanced the Central Queensland Bid is.

“Through this sponsorship and their continued support of the CQ NRL Bid, QR National has really stepped up for Central Queenslanders. CQ is rugby league’s heartland and our region deserves an NRL team. I have no doubt that the QR National Schools Program and Education Foundation will be a resounding success and provide great experiences and opportunities for young Central Queenslanders to follow their dreams. The CQ NRL Bid is now providing programs to this community that current NRL teams provide and it is a great way to demonstrate our commitment to Central Queensland”

The QR National Education Foundation will award five high school scholarships per year to disadvantaged youth in the Central Queensland Region.

“The scholarships will give these young Central Queenslanders a great opportunity to pursue sporting and schooling excellence. It’s an opportunity, which in all likelihood, would not have been afforded to them because of their disadvantaged circumstances. The Education Foundation is a great initiative and QR National must be commended for providing the funding to make it happen.”

- CQ NRL Bid CEO, Denis Keeffe

QR National General Manager, Paul Cronin believes QR National is backing a winner through their partnership with the CQ NRL Bid.

“It makes perfect sense for QR National and the CQ NRL Bid to partner together to make this happen. Over half of our 9000 employees live and work in Central Queensland. I am proud that QR National’s sponsorship can provide scholarships through the Education Foundation for disadvantaged youths in Central Queensland to change their lives for the better. QR National is committed to Central Queensland and I have every confidence that Geoff Murphy and his team will do what it takes to get this region its own National Rugby League team.”

- QR National General Manager, Paul Cronin

The QR National Education Foundation will provide five scholarships for students aged 12-15 with disadvantaged circumstances who have shown potential and commitment to pursue excellence in sport and scholastic endeavours. Scholarship holders will be given financial assistance with schooling, sporting and associated costs, as well as receive specialised mentoring from former NRL players who have originated from CQ.

The QR National Schools Program will involve the CQ NRL Bid visiting up to 120 primary schools in Central Queensland with promotion of healthy, positive lifestyle choices for young people and a range of rugby league gear and coaching activities.

“The program will be flexible and endeavour to cater to the needs and wants of the primary schools in Central Queensland. The Schools Program will incorporate rugby league coaching clinics to classes, promotions at assembly and assistance with fundraising activities for schools. It is really up to the individual school to determine where we can assist. We will also assist by promoting healthy and positive choices for students in and out of school which is really important for local communities in Central Queensland”

- CQ NRL Bid CEO, Denis Keeffe

The CQ NRL Bid now has over 28,000 signatures in support of the Bid and over 100 Corporate Partners and growing. The CQ NRL Team will unite the largest geographical area of any existing team in the National Rugby League, drawing together a diverse and industrious community through a shared passion and common identity. QR National, the largest freight company in Australia stands among the nation’s top fifty public companies.
