RUGBY LEAGUE TALENT APLENTY IN CQ

The CQ NRL Bid’s Elite Development squads are assembling at Rockhampton Grammar School for their annual camp prior to the southern tour. The CQ 13s and 14s will be put to the test by some of the best Rugby League schools in the south east of the state. It’s a special time for all concerned and we should be grateful and appreciate the fact that CQ is continuing to produce wonderful Rugby League talent, as has been the case for over 100 years.

Just a quick visit to the “roll call” section of the Bid’s web site will provide evidence that some of the great names of our game not only originate from CQ but are actively involved with the Bid as mentors and role models to the emerging talent in our different programs.

Fantastic former NRL, Origin and Australian players like Matt Sing, Gary Larson, PJ Marsh, Jason Hetherington, Steve Bell, Justin Loomans, Sid Domic and many more are Central Queenslanders who are involved in different honorary capacities with the CQ NRL Bid.

I often tell audiences that the CQ NRL team will be a development club and not a recruitment club. We are all about providing opportunity to our own to play Rugby League at the highest level in an environment which supplies the required support mechanisms that HOME provides.

I know that some of the young men in our development program will be the next generation of elite NRL players who originate from CQ.  Often people from outside of CQ don’t understand this, so to prove my point here is a list of some first grade NRL players form CQ who played in the NRL in 2012, their respective NRL Clubs and the town or city that produced these players.

Current NRL Players Current Club Town of Origin

On top of this very impressive list, there are another thirty odd young men who originate from CQ that played in the Under 20, NYC competition this year.

The production line never stops – The next generation of Matty Scott, Dave Taylor, Ben Barba, Daly Cherry-Evans etc is playing Rugby League right now in Central Queensland. They will have their chance to represent CQ with honour and distinction in the not too distant future.
